Back in October 2013, Facebook announced it would be offering a new
‘Facebook Alpha program’ for Android users who want to test out fresh
features before they hit the stable release. Facebook has been testing a
redesigned version of the Android app that looks similar to its iOS
variant, offers a completely new flat UI and many changes under the
hood, and brings new tabbed navigation to the table. The flat UI variant
hasn’t hit the stable channel yet, and although the social network
giant will begin rolling it out in the coming days, you can test it on
your device right now by joining the Facebook Alpha program. In this
guide, we’ll show you how. Read on!
The first thing you need to do is make sure you’re not already a member of Facebook Beta test program as this may create conflict between alpha and beta updates of the app. If you’re already a beta tester, then simply head over to its Google Group, click the small User button at top right corner and click ‘Leave this group’...
If you’re not already a member of Beta Tester Program then simply skip this step.
Now opt in for Facebook Alpha Program by joining its Google Group. If you don’t have a Google+ profile, you must first create it. Having done that, visit Facebook Alpha Testers Group on Google Groups and click the ‘Join Group’ button.
On the proceeding screen, after reading all the instructions (if you need to), click ‘Join this group’ button.
After joining the group, you’ll be given a few instructions regarding how to download the app on your device. All you need to do is click the link besides the line that says ‘Become a Tester’.
The next step is to click the ‘Become A Tester’ button again on the following screen. It will prompt you for confirmation as well as give you the app’s Play Store page from where you can download the Facebook app. Your existing Facebook app will be replaced by the Alpha version. Alternatively, you may be asked within a few hours to update your current Facebook app directly from your device.
The forthcoming Android app looks fantastic with a better looking interface and improved overall navigation.
In case you need to revert back to the stable version, simply unjoin the Alpha Program Google Group and reinstall Facebook from Google Play.
