While Google added native screen recording support in Android 4.4 KitKat, the feature didn’t come with any native user interface to trigger it from the phone itself; it could only be triggered by users over ADB from a computer, or by developers in their apps. The ability to record a screencast of the activity on our devices can prove to be very useful, especially when preparing tutorials and presentations or writing reviews. CyanogenMod has always been about making the most useful features a part of the custom ROM’s experience, and with the CyanogenMod 11 nightlies, that includes the ability to record your device’s on-screen activity, thanks to CyanogenMod Screencast app by Koush (the developer of the famous ClockworkMod recovery). Currently in beta, the app requires the latest CyanogenMod nightly ROM to work, but works wonderfully without a glitch. In addition to recording just the screencast, it also records voice using your device’s microphone...
Using CyanogenMod Screencast couldn’t be simpler; launch the app, tap the ‘Start Screencast’ button and you’re good to go – recording will begin instantly. In order to control recording, the app places its persistent notification in the notification shade, complete with controls to toggle the visibility of your screen touches, and stop the screenshot whenever desired. You also get to see the current length of the recorded video in the notification.
Once you’ve recorded all the screen activity you wanted, just hit the Stop button in the notification, or turn your device’s screen off, and the recording will be saved automatically. You will then be able to use the Share option in the notification to easily share it with anyone using any of your installed apps that have the ability to share videos. The videos themselves are stored on your device’s storage under the Movies folder in a sub-folder appropriately named Screencasts. Similar to the way screenshots are saved, the screencast video files are named based on their time and date of capture.
Here’s a screencast recorded with the app, complete with sound:
CyanogenMod Screencast is currently in beta, and before you can install the app, you must first join theCyanogenMod Google+ community and then join the beta test. After joining the test, you will be able to install the app from Play Store just like any other app.
