McAfee Security Innovations Binds Your Android Devices Together To Prevent Loss

McAfee is a name that many associate with security and their famous anti-virus programs. The company doesn’t just make apps to keep your data safe and your computers malware-free. McAfee Security Innovations is an Android app that is a versatile set of security features for both your data and your device. The app has a ‘Smart Perimeter’ feature that allows you to connect multiple Android devices over Wi-Fi and should the two connected devices be separated by more than 30meters, either because you forgot your device somewhere or because it got stolen, an alarm sounds on both of them. Additionally, the screen gets locked and can only be unlocked with the four digit PIN that you set up when adding devices. Apart from this, McAfee Security Innovations has a ‘Data Vault’ that, with McAfee Security installed, lets you securely backup files. Lastly, it has a QR code scanner that checks if the link hidden in a QR code is safe or not before opening it in the browser...
To activate the Perimeter feature, tap ‘Smart Perimeter’ on the app’s home screen and activate it. This feature might not work for all devices and the app will alert you if your device isn’t compatible. All devices that you want to link must be running the McAfee Security Innovations app as well, and should be on the same Wi-Fi network. Tap and hold a device to rename or disarm it.

Create & Manage Collaborative Magazines In Flipboard For Android & iOS

The addition of user-curated magazines to Flipboard seems like a step in the right direction, since many people prefer getting the latest news from ordinary people rather than journalists, as Twitter’s rise to fame has clearly demonstrated. Flipboard’s last update didn’t deal with magazines to a large extent, but now the user-created collections are back in the spotlight. With Flipboard 2.0.3, you can ask anyone to contribute to your magazines. Such collections have multiple curators, with any contributor being able to add new content to the mix whenever they want. To make sure the changes are put to maximum use, Flipboard also pushes notifications whenever a new user invites you to start contributing or adds some new content to a magazine you created...
A bit oddly, Flipboard doesn’t make use of its excellent notification system when you invite a new user to start contributing to a mag. Instead, these invitations are sent via email, but maybe this is to make things easier for users of the Flipboard bookmarklet, or to be able to invite those who aren’t using Flipboard yet. If you aren’t really sure how to set up a collaborative magazine, just follow the instructions listed below.

Get A Global Start Menu & Windows 8-Style Taskbar In Android

It’s common knowledge that Windows 8 doesn’t sport the Start Button or the Start Menu, though the former is speculated to arrive soon with Windows 8.1. This is apparently the most important feature missing from the new OS, even making many people think twice before switching to Windows 8. But how about having a Windows-esque Start Orb and Start Menu on your smartphone? If you ever wanted to bring Windows-like Start Menu to Android, consider your wish granted in the form of Taskbar – Windows 8 Style. Developed by Root Uninstaller and available on Google Play Store for free, this little app is designed to make multitasking a tad bit easier by bringing app and setting shortcuts to a Windows 8-style start menu that always stays on top of any app or screen that you have open. Once installed, it places a persistent Start button at the bottom-right, tapping which brings up the Start menu with user-specified shortcuts...

Profile Flow Allows Easy Time-Based System Automation On Android

The genre of system/task automation apps for Android is quite crowded. There’s Tasker – this behemoth of an app that will automate your device down to adding a sugar cube to your coffee based on its temperature, if the device supported that. However, if the purpose is as simple as setting up automated profiles for different occasions, Profile Flow will do all of that from its beautiful Holo UI in an interface interface that won’t leave you scratching your head trying to figure what to configure. You can set up multiple profiles and trigger them based on date, time range, day etc., while defining ‘entry tasks’ and ‘exit tasks’. We take a closer look at how the app functions after the jump...

Front Flash For Android Allows For Brighter In-The-Dark Selfies

Front-facing cameras on mobile phones have usually been quite neglected by most manufacturers, especially in light of the major improvements in their rear-facing counterparts. Improved lenses, sensors, flash etc. have all been targeted at the rear cameras in smartphones, leaving a lot to be desired in the front-facing cameras’ quality – which is at best suited for casual video chats or some occasionally impulsive self-shots. Sensors and quality aside, the user is also set aback when taking a self-shot in low light conditions due to the absence of a flash. While smartphones manufacturers really need to address this issue in the future, and not just for self-shots but for video-chats in low light conditions as well, if you have an Android device and find yourself taking self-shots more often than you would have us believing,Front Flash may just be what you need...

Create & Run Macros To Automate Actions With Android Bot Maker

Android Bot Maker is an automation tool for users running a rooted Android 4.1+ device. It allows users to record several different gestures, screen taps, swipes, text input, and key presses, and run them on loop until the user stops it. It’s a fairly sophisticated app that lets you create several different lists of these actions, share your lists, and import or export them. The actions are added as a sequence of events, which can be considered a macro of a sort, and can be very useful to do repetitive tasks without having to go through performing the required actions yourself repeatedly. You can also create and save multiple lists of actions, and load any of them at any time when you want to run it. The best part? The app does it all for free, though it is ad-supported and offers no way to remove them in form of an in-app purchase or a paid variant...
Launch Android Bot Maker and you’ll be able to start recording your actions. Tap the plus sign to add an action and select what type of action you want to add from the list. There are five types of actions available for you to add: tap, swipe, key press, text input, and sleep. Having at least one sleep action is mandatory to complete an executable cycle of actions...

Install Stock Google Keyboard On Any Android Device From Play Store

If you thought Google has a habit of just chopping off their useful services and apps, think again. One of the best and most intuitive element of Android is apparently its Google-designed stock Android keyboard, which has all the features you’d want from an optimum text input method accompanied by a simple yet decent layout. Google has packed it with the best features cherry-picked from other awesomely designed keyboard apps including Swiftkey and Swype. But unfortunately, this vanilla keyboard is usually absent on third party OEM devices such as Galaxy S4 or HTC One, because they ship their own OEM solutions. Finally, good news for folks who want to download standard Android keyboard on their devices, as Google released Google Keyboard on the Play Store. That’s right, the official Android keyboard that ships with Nexus devices can now be used on non-Nexus ones by simply installing it like any other app. Lets take a closer look...

Hide Your Last Seen & Message Read Status On WhatsApp For Android

Both Viber and WhatsApp are feature-rich apps that provide users of all major smartphone platforms like iOS, Android, Windows Phone and BlackBerry with a single communication channel for their online messaging and VoIP calls. The popularity of these apps is such that at times, other apps are developed in order to tweak how they work, extend their functionality, or to make them work faster or more efficiently. W-Tools is a small app that lets you appear inactive on WhatsApp but still read your messages. What it does is keep the app from updating your ‘last seen’ time as well as the ‘read’ state of your received messages so that those who sent you messages after your last seen time think you haven’t seen them yet. It’s useful when you want to stay alert for an urgent message but not be bothered by small things. The app also has a ‘bomber’ feature that allows you send the same message multiple times to a single contact or a group of contacts...
From the app’s home screen, select the ‘Hide Last seen’ option and choose what kind of connection you’re using i.e. Wi-Fi or Mobile Internet (Edge). Once you’ve made the selection, tap ‘Start Service’. W-Tools will now run in the background, and you can read messages without them knowing you’ve opened the app since your last ‘last seen’ time.

realtor.com rentals For Android Helps You Find The Right Home To Rent

Finding a job is hard, but finding a place to live so you can easily commute to work and not be broke as soon as you’ve paid rent is even harder. The classified section in the paper (yes, people do still read newspapers) and online classified ads is how most people search for an apartment or house. To say that the search itself is tedious would be a grossly understated way of describing the process, but there are easier ways to hunt for an affordable place to stay. realtor.com rentals apt & home (yes, that is the name of the app on Play Store) is a free Android app that makes it considerably easy to look for an affordable place to live. It lets you pick the city you’re looking for a place to stay in, and select how many bedrooms & bathrooms you need, and specify what rent you can afford to pay. You can also choose if you need a place to park, if the place is pet friendly etc. Searches can be saved, and where available, you can view pictures of the actual place you will be renting...
Sign up for a free Realtor.com account to start using rentals. The app will ask to access you current location. If you’re looking for a place to stay near your current location, tap the location button at the top-right to pinpoint yourself on the map. If you’re moving to a different city altogether, tap the search button instead.

Download Gmail For Android v4.5 APK With New Tabbed Inbox, Navigation Drawer & More

Google recently released a new tabbed interface for Gmail, announcing the same changes for its Android app in a soon-to-be-released update. Though said update, labeled v4.5, began rolling out yesterday, it might take some time for it to come to your device. But that doesn’t mean you have to wait. An XDA member has been kind enough to share an APK for the new Gmail app on the forum, the link to which you’ll find at the end of this post. Coming to the app itself, it’s a whole new experience combining the new tabbed Inbox and Google’s latest interface design guidelines, as per which, the app now has a slide-out navigation drawer and actions along the top instead of in a bottom bar. Apart from that, the app now supports pull to refresh (about time!) and options to quickly empty your Trash and Spam folders of all mail...

Paranoid Android’s HALO Notification System – A Complete Review

CyanogenMod is usually the first name that comes to mind when talking about custom ROMs for Android, but it isn’t the only big player in the game. Over the past couple of years, a few other ROMs like MIUI and AOKP have also joined the ranks of this behemoth, but none of them has been as innovative as Paranoid Android. In addition to bringing us per-app system colors, choice between phone, tablet, phablet and hybrid UIs, and the famous full-screen PIE navigation system, the latest and arguably the greatest feature brought to the world of Android by this AOSP-based ROM is HALO – a Facebook Chat Heads-style notification system that works universally for all your system and app notifications. What’s more – it also opens up the relevant screen of the appropriate app in a floating window for you to respond to the notification, so you don’t have to completely switch to that app from what you’re doing. Let’s take a more detailed look at it right after the break...
Paranoid-Android-HALO
HALO is one of the best things to ever hit Android. It is basically an omnipresent bubble that shows you notifications for every app and system feature installed on your device right on top of whatever app or screen you have open, while still remaining unobtrusive enough to not cause a distraction in your workflow. The bubble also shows the picture or icon associated with the notification – basically what you would see in the notification pull-down gets shown in the circle. Here, take a look for yourself.

Dashlane Gets Improved Desktop App UI, Two-Step Authentication & Built-In Browser On Android

Dashlane is one of the most popular password managers and security vaults for sensitive information that you enter in your browser. The service and its apps work with your browsers to save and auto-fill important information, eliminating your dependence on your browser’s own password manager and auto-fill feature, which isn’t the most secure place for important data and doesn’t work across different browsers. Dashlane updated both its Mac and PC apps a while back, as well as its Android app. Both Mac and PC apps have had a design overhaul as well as the addition of a ‘Security dashboard’ that finds security loopholes or possible flaws on your system and tells you how to fix them. It’s also adds 2-factor authentication via Google Authenticator. The Android app has also received two-factor authentication and in addition, now offers an in-app browser that you can sign into easily with the account information you’ve saved in Dashlane, and supports both portrait and landscape orientation...

Schedule Encrypted Backups On Android & Save To Dropbox With truBackup

A timely data backup can save you a lot of hassle. Android users have long been using NANDROID backups to make a ditto copy of their phone’s system and data storage to the device’s internal or external sdcard. These backups prove very useful in case you need to revert back to previous working state of your phone, especially if something goes wrong. However, NANDROID backups don’t let you store separate copies of each category of items, which means you cannot specifically backup or restore only your SMS, photos or applications separately. There are many solutions out there for this, Titanium Backup being the most famous, and truBackup is the latest one that you might like to give a try. This Android app works perfectly as advertised and lets you create as many backups as you want, allowing you to backup only the type of files you want, be it contacts, SMS, apps, or media files. Besides letting you store backups on internal/external storage, the app can save files straight to your Dropbox account as well...

Official imgur Android App Now Available For Download In All Regions

If you’re a frequent redditor, you’ve most likely heard of imgur. It’s a simple and fast image hosting service that lets you easily upload and share pictures, with or without an account. imgur has been around for quite a while and has become almost as popular as Reddit (or perhaps made popular by Reddit), but it’s official Android app debuted only last month, and that too with download restrictions based on your country. The restrictions have now been lifted, and you can download the app from any part of the globe. The app is just as fast as its web interface and allows you to upload images from your camera roll without signing in. You get an email and deletion link for any and all images that you upload. You can set a number of days to browse past images from, explore images uploaded to a particular sub-reddit, or simply browse images randomly. Playback of animated GIFs is also supported...
When you first launch the app, you’re taken to the imgur gallery. Tapping any image opens it in the image viewer, which is pretty much the same one you’re used to seeing on the web interface of the service.

Twitter has just released an update for both its iOS and Android apps and it comes with new features, an improved interface, as well as the removal of a few features that many active Twitter users will miss. The interface change, in Twitter’s own words, gives you wider timelines across the app. This interface change is for the iPhone only, and not the iPad. More functional changes to both iOS and Android app include viewing a thumbnail of the image you’re sharing instead of the cropped-out top half only, along with the ability to preview your tweet before sending it, toggle location information on/off for it, and switch between accounts as you compose a tweet. For users running Android 4.1 or above, the updated app also brings richer notifications, complete with user avatars and markers that tell you if it’s a reply, a retweet, a DM etc...

Tweak Playback Quality On Android With The Sleek Music Equalizer

Over the years, smartphones have vastly improved in pretty much every aspect. They now have better cameras, more vivid displays, sturdy yet aesthetically pleasing build quality, enhanced audio output and better connectivity options, in addition to more powerful processors and large amounts of RAM & storage. When it comes to audio, many people now use their smartphones to listen to music from cloud-based music streaming services like Spotify and Pandora. That said, smartphones have almost replaced dedicated portable audio players as well, that once used to dominate the market. While the sound quality varies from one device to device, and purportedly depends on how expensive your phone is, there are certain apps that can spice up the sound output through software equalization. One such free app for Android that we stumbled upon is Music Equalizer. The application is fairly powerful, and comes with quite a few different presets from various music genres...

Your Aadhaar card hasn’t reached you yet? Download e-Aadhaar

Your Aadhaar card hasn’t reached you yet? Download e-AadhaarAround four years ago, the Indian government had announced the implementation of a unique identification number or Aadhaar card (something like the social security number in the US) for every citizen. Soon, registering and obtaining the Aadhaar card was on the agenda of almost every well-informed citizen. In fact, the government’s decision to make it a mandatory document in government schemes, banks, schools and so on had fuelled the urgency to obtain it quickly. The card still isn't mandatory, though, at least for now. Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), the agency responsible for implementing the Aadhaar card, has several enrollment centres across the country, and the procedure is hassled with long queues to acquire the form. Along with the form, the resident will be assigned a specific day for enrolling. This day can be within the next week or even months away. You then have to go and submit the Aadhaar application form along with other required security checks...

Reddit Illustrated For Android Offers A Google Now-Like Cards-Based UI

Reddit doesn’t have  an official app for the Android platform, which is disappointing especially considering there is one for iOS. Though that makes it an opportunity for developers to create apps that fill this void. If you’re looking for a better way to Reddit on your Android device, you can take you pick from our list of best Reddit Apps for Android. Though if you’re on the hunt for something that’s slightly more appealing in the visual sense, give Reddit Illustrated a try. It’s a free Android app for browsing Reddit built entirely on the Holo guidelines by Google. It’s also somewhat similar, interface-wise, to Google Now; individual posts in any subreddit appear as cards. You can browse popular subreddits, view the front page, add any subreddit of your choice for quick access (sign in not required), download and share photos, and set a downloaded photo as your wallpaper from within the app. NSFW content can be filtered out, you can sign in and upvote/downvote content, and post comments in thread. The only downside at the moment is that the app doesn’t support GIFs – a shortcoming the average redditor is quite likely to be disappointed with...
To switch between different subreddits, open the navigation drawer and select one, or go to the ‘Front’ or ‘All’ page. Each individual post appears as a card, complete with the number of upvotes and comments it has received, along with buttons for upvoting/downvoting and sharing it.

Get Chat Heads-Like Per-App Alerts In Android With Floating Notifications

Facebook Chat Heads caused quite a stir when the feature was first released on Android in form of Facebook Home as well as the updated Facebook Messenger app, and even more so after later making it to the Facebook app for iOS. The feature inspired the likes of the famous Paranoid Android ROM developers for Android, who then created their HALO feature with Chat Heads-like support for all notifications. This, however, required the installation of the custom ROM – something most people wouldn’t do just to get a single feature. Senior XDA-Developers forum member ‘crazyfool_1’ has just released what is a free and working Chat Heads-like app for Android and better yet, it has answered the needs of all those who wish to use this feature on their stock ROMs. Floating Notifications is currently in alpha, but is working better and better with every update. In essence, you will see a floating icon on the screen pertaining to the relevant app whenever a notification is received. This icon can be dragged around for repositioning and tapped to see the details of the notification. Read on as we take a closer look at the app’s features and how it functions...

GO Dev Team Enters The Android Web Browser Arena With Next Browser

Even if you aren’t much of an Android fan, you might still have heard the name GO, which has long been rocking the Android ecosystem. No, it’s not a phone or a tablet, nor a pair of stylish headphones. In the Android world, the name GO is associated with a feature-laden launcher, a beautiful weather app, an exceptionally great SMS app, and loads of other great tools that are created by the super-talented GO Dev Team. Keeping their tradition, the folks behind the ever-popular GO Launcher have released a fascinating new app called Next Browser for Android. If you’re wondering why’d you need yet another browser when the likes of Opera, Chrome and Dolphin are already available for the platform, then we must tell you that Next Browser has what it takes to be in the same league as these names, packing in a plethora of features such as speed dial, an awesome Next View feature to find and explore interesting content, voice search, browser extensions support, bookmarks synchronization and more...
Although Next Browser won’t trounce the competition when it come to looks and functionality, everything that’s there works really well. Page rendering is fluid, tabs work well, speed dial provides instant access to your favorite sites, and the extensions support expand Next Browser’s functionality a few notches further. The app’s interface also looks pretty cool, while at the same time being fairly simple. When launched, you land on the speed dial screen, where you will find links to some popular websites such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Yahoo, CNN, Amazon and Pinterest by default, though you can always replace them with your own favorite or frequently visited websites. The tabs also works great, allowing you to quickly add new ones for browsing multiple sites in conjunction. Existing tabs can be closed by swiping them down in the tabs view...

Glide Allows Easy Video Messaging With Live Broadcast On Android & iOS

Messaging over mobile phone, or more precisely smartphones, has evolved beyond the simple texts that we used to send when Nokia was at the top of its game and everyone owned one of those indestructible yet ugly Handsets from the Finnish manufacturer.  Today, messages are mostly sent over the internet, and can be anything from simple texts to images, voice clips, or even small video clips. Glide – Video Walkie Talkie is a messaging app for Android and iOS that lets you send video messages, or broadcast your video live to friends (currently only supports Facebook). It’s something like a cross between Skype and an answering machine. You can chat with one or several friends at once, and also leave messages for those who are offline. To send and receive messages, both the sender and recipient(s) must have the app installed...
After installing the app, sign in using your Facebook account. You can tap the contacts button at the top-right to view which of your friends are using the app, and select any one of them to send a message. It isn’t important for them to be online; any message you send will be delivered to them when they next log in...

Google Drive is one of the services that didn’t make it to the headlines at Google I/O a few days back, and no noteworthy update to the service was expected either. What we do have now, is an update for the Google Drive Android app, a massive one. There are new features, a new interface, and bug fixes. When you update the app, the first thing you will notice is he interface that is now cleaner and easier to scroll, gives you a grid like view, and follows the card-based UI that users love from Google Now. Feature wise, the app can now connect with your camera to snap documents, and convert them to searchable PDF files using OCR. File editors now allow you to view a file’s properties, fonts & cell highlights can be edited for spreadsheets, and files can be made available offline...
Once you’ve updated the app, the interface will be the first and most obvious change you will notice. You can tap the little ‘i’ button to view file properties. From there, you can also set the file to be viewable offline...

Kakudo Brings iPad-Like Quick App Switching Gestures To Android

The way Android handles multitasking is simply phenomenal. You can easily switch back and forth between apps, thanks to the ‘Recent Apps’ feature introduced in Ice Cream Sandwich. Although I won’t cite it as true-multitasking like that in Windows or OS X, it still outdoes iOS and Windows Phone 7. However, I feel like there’s a lot of room to improve, as one has to continuously tap the recent apps button (or long press a key on some devices like the Galaxy S series) to switch between the apps. XDA member Acela1230 has come up with a surprisingly useful app called Kakudo, which makes switching apps (and as a matter of fact, multitasking itself) tenfold easier. The application uses an iPad-esque multitasking function that lets you use left and right swipe gestures to switch between running apps. Lets take a quick look...
Kakudo replicates four finger gestures app switching in a way, and brings it to Android to lets users quickly switch between apps via swiping from the left or right edges of the device’s screen. This makes it fairly easy to work between two apps in conjunction, such as copy-paste operations from app to the other, jotting down your favorite quotes off the internet from the web browser to a note taking app etc. Upon swiping from either edges, the screen vibrates and instantly switches to the other app in line.
Kakudo provides a number of settings that you can turn on and off according to your preferences. The settings panel not only lets you make changes to how the feature works, but also let you turn it off altogether. The available set of options include toggling swipe behavior for available set of features, enabling or disabling the vibration function, and adjusting sensitivity of the swipe gesture. Another interesting bit is the ability to place a few apps in a favorites bar for quick access, that can be brought up via swiping up from the bottom edge of the screen.
